The Vitz is a 3 and 5 door hatchback automobile. In Europe, the Americas, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, it is sold as the Yaris liftback (or simply Yaris). The vehicle was known as the Echo hatchback up to 2005 in Canada, the US, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

Europe

The Toyota Yaris went on sale in Europe early in 1999. After the launch of the European Yaris hatchback in February 1999, a slightly modified version went on sale in Canada for the 2004 model year as the Echo hatchback, but not in the United States, where the Toyota Echo sedan was the lone model. The Toyota Yaris was voted European Car of the Year in 2000, defeating the innovative Fiat Multipla by a narrow margin.

Instead of conventional instruments, the Yaris and Echo hatchbacks utilized digital instruments which were mounted in the center of the dashboard. The Canadian Echo hatchback (and the Yaris T Sport) had a conventional speedometer but it was still mounted in the center of the dashboard.

The European Yaris was initially available with gasoline-powered 4-cylinder 1.0 L or 1.3 L engines with Toyota's VVT-i technology, with the "warm hatch" 1.5 L T Sport following in 2001. After the 2003 facelift, a 1.4 L D4-D diesel engine offering 75 hp (56 kW) was also included in the lineup. This diesel engine is also licensed to BMW for use in their MINI One D model.

The Yaris was popular with buyers who wanted an economical and practical small car with a bit more style and innovation than the likes of the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, but it failed to match the driver appeal of the Peugeot 206 — except, perhaps, for the T Sport model.[citation needed]

Japan

The Japanese Vitz RS (European Yaris T-Sport) was introduced in 2001 and was powered by a 1.5 L (108 hp) engine, shared with the Echo, Vios, as well as the Scion xA. The 1.5 L T Sport was marketed as 'more fun to drive' than the base models because of a sportier suspension and extra power compared to the 1.3 L (90 hp) model. Later, the Vitz RS was modified by TRD (Toyota Racing Developments), and was fitted with a turbo-charger. A limited run was produced with a power output of around 120 kW (180 bhp) and a 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) time of just 7 seconds.

North America

The Echo sold in very high volumes in Canada, where smaller cars are much more popular than in the US. Sales were so high that Toyota introduced the 3 and 5-door hatchback models to the Canadian Toyota lineup for the 2004 model year. They were sold as the 'Echo hatchback' and look almost identical to the European Yaris, but with minor changes like larger bumpers, to meet Canadian safety requirements.

Australia

The Echo was also very popular in Australia. First introduced in late 1999 to replace the aging Starlet, the Echo was available as a 3 or 5 door hatchback, fitted only with the 1.3l VVT-i engine. An Echo Sportivo variant, fitted with the 1.5l VVT-i engine, was made available for a limited time in Australia. The Sportivo was very similar to the European Yaris T-Sport.

Yaris Verso

An interesting addition to the Yaris range came in 2000 with the Yaris Verso, a small MPV which used the same running gear as the conventional hatchback, but was designed to have an even more practical interior. In Japan, the model bore the name of 'Fun Cargo'. The model was replaced by the Ractis in 2004.

Toyota Belta

Toyota redesigned the Vitz in early 2005, immediately going on sale in Japan. The European, Australian, Canadian, Mexican and Puerto Rican markets saw the second generation Vitz near the end of 2005. In the Australian and North American markets, the car was sold as the "Yaris" for the first time. The production USA 2007 Toyota Yaris was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2006. The new Yaris is built in Japan, France and Thailand.

The 4-cylinder 1.0 VVT-i engine was replaced by the 3-cylinder engine, also found in the Toyota Aygo and Daihatsu Sirion. The 1.3 liter engine was revised to offer slightly more power, and the 1.4 D-4D got a 15 PS boost to 90 PS (66 kW). The Yaris became the first car in its class to offer nine airbags.

It has continued to prove popular in Europe, particularly in Britain, where it continues to offer an appealing package for buyers who want something different to the run-of-the-mill Fiestas, Corsas and Clios.

North America

The Canadian Yaris hatchback is available in 3 and 5-door models, running on the Toyota NZ engine, a 1.5 L 4-cylinder VVT-i engine rated 106 hp (79 kW) and 103 ft·lbf (140 nm) torque. The 2006 Yaris with the 1.5 liter engine can achieve fuel economy ratings of 40 miles per gallon (6 l/100 km) during highway driving and 34 MPG (7 l/100 km) during city driving. 3-door CE and 5-door LE versions come with 14-inch wheels, while RS models are equipped with 15-inch alloys with standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).

The US Yaris is similar to the Canadian variant. In the US, the 3-door Vitz shares the Yaris name with the Toyota Belta sedan. The 3-door model is called the 'Yaris Liftback', while the 5-door model is not sold in the United States, since the Scion xD has the same features and therefore, serves a similar purpose. The US Yaris comes standard with the 1.5 liter VVT-i engine and five speed manual transmission, the four speed automatic ECT being optional. The US models have optional ABS and optional side and head airbags. The CE, LE, and RS packages in the Canadian hatchback are replaced by the more modular convenience, power, and all-weather guard packages.

T-Sport

The Toyota Yaris T-Sport was launched in 2007. It was first seen at the Geneva Motor Show and is powered by the new 130 bhp (97 kW) 1.8 L dual VVT-i petrol engine, which can reach 100 km/h in under 10 seconds. The T-Sport features 17 inch alloy wheels, a mesh grille at the front, a redesigned bumper at the rear, deep side skirts and a tail spoiler. It also features redesigned headlights and taillights. As in the previous T-Sport, there are extra rear lights on the bumper.

>>Toyota Vista

Toyota Vista

1994 Toyota Vista
1994 Toyota Vista

The Toyota Vista was launched by Toyota in 1982 as a sister nameplate to the Toyota Camry. The name was introduced to tie in with Toyota's dealership network of the same name, and launched around the same time.

Each Vista model is essentially a Japanese-market Toyota Camry, with different front- and rear-end treatment; plus, while Camry is always a sedan, most Vistas up to V40 are hardtop. When the Camry was redesigned, so was the Vista. This pattern will continue until late 1996, when a new, larger, US-oriented Camry took over the "Camry" name (earlier this larger CX/CV platform was marketed in Japan as Scepter (MCV10) and Camry Gracia (MCV20/MCX20)). Then in August 1998 the Vista would be redesigned, independent of the Camry.

Fourth generation: 1998–2003

1998 Toyota Vista
1998 Toyota Vista

While the Camry became a US-centric model with the narrower, shorter Japanese version eliminated, the Vista continues to embrace the 4700 mm (185 in) x 1700 mm (66.9 in) length-width bracket, legacy of a Japanese taxation law. With this redesign, however, Toyota decided to revitalize the Vista nameplate. The car is 100 mm (3.9 in) taller than its predecessor.

This Vista is significant because it's one of the first fruits of Toyota's company-wide platform renewal efforts. Studies for new FWD platform and packaging (layout) began in 1993 and appeared on market in February 1997 in the Toyota Prius, but the Vista is the first mass-production, FWD Toyota with a new platform. Toyota claims this is the first true redesign and re-think of its FWD platforms since the 1982 Camry/Vista. With this platform, Toyota trades rear McPherson Struts for a torsion beam axle setup. A double-wishbone setup reminiscent of the Nissan Primera axle is available for all-wheel drive—this will become the rear suspension for more demanding FWD cars such as the final Toyota Celica. Toyota also flips the engine orientation so that the intake manifold is in front, improving space efficiency.

The fourth generation Vista was available as a sedan, and a station wagon called the Vista Ardeo. 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines were available. The interior features a center instrument panel/navigation display.

Production for the Vista halted in July 2003, as Toyota prepared to merge the Vista dealers into the Netz dealership network. The move to simplify Toyota's dealership came in light of the pending Lexus launch in Japan, planned for August 2005. In April 2005 the process was complete and all Vista dealers became Netz dealers.

The second generation Toyota Vios 1.5S, seen here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, features minor exterior modifications, including spoilers and side skirts.

The second generation Vios was first unveiled in Malaysia on October 5, 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, two weeks ahead of its official launch on October 19, 2007.

The car, like its predecessors, is powered by a 1NZ-FE 1.5 litre four-pot engine with VVT-i but includes redesigns on the air intake and exhaust system to improve low to mid-range torque. While the gear ratios of Vios is unchanged, its transmission is a now Super ECT four-speed automatic and improved programming for the transmission control unit. Electric power steering was also included on the new Vios.

Grades

The second generation Vios is currently available in three grades: two grades initially available on the previous Malaysian Vios (E and G), and a new grade (S).

The E grade is the entry-level model, branded as a cost-effective version of the Vios, and is the cheapest and most stripped-down Vios among the three grades, priced at around an estimated RM 78,900. The car includes several cut-backs compared to the G and S grades, including:

  • Rear drum brakes instead of an all-disc set-up for the G and E grades;
  • 14-inch alloy rims as oppose to 15 for the G and S;
  • driver's side only airbag as opposed to dual-front airbags for the G and S;
  • driver's side only pretensioned, forced limited seatbelts as opposed such seatbelts on all occupants' sides for the G and S; and
  • a single-DIN CD receiver and four-speaker system, instead of steering mounted audio controls and six-speaker, dashboard integrated CD receiver with MP3 and WMA-playback capability for the G and S.

The new Vios line saw the inclusion of a new S grade Vios. The S grade features cosmetic enhancements rather than a performance-based ones, sporting a set of "aero parts", a minor body kit encompassing a front bumper spoiler, side skirts and a bootlid spoiler. The interior receives a dark grey/black trim treatment, and includes an "Optitron" meter with a multi-information display, as opposed to the E and G grades' conventional backlit display. The S variant is estimated to be the most expensive Vios among the three, at around RM 88,600.

The G grade is considered to be a mid-priced model between the E and S grades, retailing at an estimated RM 85,300.

All model grades were reported to include ABS, EBD and brake assist, as are passive safety features such as whiplash injury lessening seats, a collapsible steering wheel column and an impact sensing fuel cut-off.

The Toyota Town Ace/Lite Ace was a vehicle made by Toyota and distributed worldwide in a multitude of different versions. It featured a sharply sloped front, in contrast to the upright flat front common in other similar Japanese vans. Also, it was released at the same time as the competing Dodge Caravan, and it is North America's first rear-wheel drive minivan before the 1985 Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari.

The American model was officially known as the Van (Vanwagon in early press materials). In Japan and Europe, it was known as the Space Cruiser, while Australia referred to the vehicle as the Tarago. In Sweden it was sold as the Toyota Model F. The rear wheel drive versions were imported to the US from 1984 to 1989, and the four wheel drive versions were imported from 1987 to 1989.

The Toyota Town Ace/Lite Ace was replaced in the United States by the Toyota Previa in 1991.

The Wonderwagon ad campaign in the 1980s advertised the Van as the "Toyota Wonderwagon", leading to some confusion. However, only the passenger models were referred to as "Wonderwagon" and the cargo versions are consistently referred to as "Cargo Vans". The Van used an front mid-engine layout, where the driver and front passenger sat directly above the front axle. The engine was placed similarly to American 1960s Compact vans between and behind the front seats, leaving a gap behind the front seats, which makes service a challenge since the engine cover must be removed in the passenger compartment. American full-sized vans and minivans by this time put the engine forward of the passenger compartment with either front wheel drive (minivan) or rear wheel drive (full-size).
