The Alfa Romeo Sprint is a coupé version of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud, produced from 1976 to 1989 by Alfa Romeo. 116,552 examples of the Alfasud Sprint and Alfa Romeo Sprint were built in total.[1] The Sprint was sold in Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

History

Alfasud Sprint (1976-1983)

Alfa Romeo Sprint (1983-1989)
Until 1983, the car's name was Alfasud Sprintand after that Alfa Romeo Sprint. It was available with a 1350 cc, 1500cc, and a 1700 cc flat-4 engine, most of which (except the very late 1.7 models) were equipped with double carburetors. The later 1.7 engines were equipped with the same fuel injection system as the Alfa Romeo 33.There were a few prototypes of 2.5 V6 rear mounted engine rear wheel drive Sprints built by Autodelta, but this vehicle never made full serial production (Sprint 6C).
In 1983, the car received a facelift; to coincide with the release of the Alfa Romeo 33. This involved a multitude of changes, notably a change from chrome to plastic bumpers, new headlamps, a new hood and grille, different materials and some changes to elements in the cabin. The Sprint also received a platform upgrade, which was now the same as that of the Alfa Romeo 33 (1st generation). This means that the Alfa 33 (1st generation) and Sprint 83-89 practically share the same mechanics. This is helpful when finding parts for 2nd generation Sprints, since 10 times more Alfa 33s were produced.
Initially the Sprint had disc brakes all around, the front ones being the inboard brake type. At the front there is independent MacPherson strut suspension, and at the rear a rigid axle with trailing beams and a Panhard rod. From 1984 all Sprints got the Alfa Romeo 33 floorpan and modified front suspension and front brakes (no longer of the inboard type). The rear end now had drum brakes. The Alfa Romeo Sprint was one of the best handling small coupes of its time. Although of only average build-quality, they were fun to drive and very predictable. With the engine mounted over the front wheels and a very low center of gravity due to the flat (boxer) engine, it has a unique way of driving in curves.
The Alfasud Sprint has justifiably been criticized about rust and poor build quality, the rust being a result of both the quality of the cheaply-bought Russian steel used for the Alfasuds at the time (which happened to contain quite some impurities), and the method of transporting the unpainted bodyworks through any kind of weather on open trolleys, towards the painting-plant in a separate building. Word has it they often arrived already slightly rusty in named painting-plant, and subsequently still were painted anyway; and without any of the protectives so common nowadays. They were built in a then new car plant in southern Italy, in Pomigliano d'Arco, hence the original 'Sud' moniker which means south. Other Alfa models were still being built in Milano. Alfa Romeo Sprint did not have the quality problems of the Alfasud.
The Sud's penchant for rust gave Alfas in general a bad name in this respect, which until today haunts their reputation; even though their more recent and current cars are not more rust-prone than most other car-brands.
There were a total of 116,552 Sprints produced during its lifespan. 15 of these formed the basis of the Australian-built Giocattolo sports car, which used a mid-mounted Holden 5.0 group A V8 engine.

Design

The 4.02 metres (158.3 in) long coupe has a very low profile and is representative of late 70s and 80s Italian car design. A year earlier than the Sprint but from the same drawing board, although with slightly different proportions, another classic 70s design was created - the Volkswagen Golf.
Until 1983 the Alfasud Sprint had stainless steel bumpers, restyling in 1983 brought plastic and lower bumpers, a different grille, and some other upgrades like 14-inch (360 mm) Italspeed wheels with 8 circles and nonstandard Michelin 340 mm tyres. Depending on equipment, some Sprints had plastic side bumpers and rear spoiler (mainly Quadrifoglio Verde). The most common was the Zender pack add-in, with lower bumpers and sideskirts, sold mostly in the UK and a few other countries.

Interior

The Alfa Sprint is a 2+2, with two seats in front and two in the rear. The two front seats came in two versions, an ordinary version and sport version with elongated thigh bolsters. An uncommon feature is the ignition key, which is on the left side of the steering wheel (instead of the more common right). On the middle console there are a few switches for the front and rear fog lamps, the rear window defroster and rear window wiper. Next to this is an analog clock by Jaeger instruments; until 1983, after which it was replaced with a digital one. Underneath are the ventilation control levers, one for hot, a second one for cold air intake, a and third to distribute flow to upper or lower vents. The rear cargo area has a capacity of 425 litres (15 cubic feet), largely due to the high profile at the rear, and it has a leather cover to conceal items from view.

Predecessors and successors

The Alfa Sprint was a coupe version of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud and it had no direct predecessor or successor. The Alfa Sprint was a small coupe, although some revival ideas came through in the last two decades, its nearest current relative is the Alfa Romeo GT (which is derived from the Alfa 147 and 156).

Racing

The Alfa Sprint used to be a very popular racing car in the late 70s until 1983. Sprint Trofeo was a well known European GT competition in those years. Still, Alfa Sprints are being used in significant numbers as racing cars, mostly in historic cups or hill climbing races, its popularity mainly due to its good handling capabilities.

  • 1.7 Boxer (1712 cc) (114 bhp, 105 bhp (78 kW) cat. version)
  • In a supercar called the Giacottolo built in caloundra in QLD, Australia the Alfa 2.5 V6 (2495 cc) (160 bhp, several prototypes built) was mid mounted in a few prototypes.
  • The later versions of these sprint based supercars had a Holden 5.0 Walkinshaw group a V8 as fitted to the VL Commodore group A cars along with a ZF transaxle, giving them a power-to-weight ratio on par with a Mclaren F1.

The Alfa Romeo GT is a sports car produced by the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo between 2003 and 2010. A total of 80,832 units were produced. The GT was introduced in March 2003 Geneva Motor Show and it came for sale in Italian markets January 2004. It was built at the Pomigliano plant, southern Italy, alongside the 147 and 159.

History

Like the 147, the GT was based on the same platform used in 156, with the coupé body styled by Bertone. Most mechanicals are taken directly from the 156/147using the same double wishbone front suspension and McPherson rear setup as those two cars. The interior is based heavily on that of the smaller hatchback 147 and utilises many common parts. The GT utilises the same dash layout and functions, the complete climate control system as well as having a very similar electrical system. The engine range includes both a 1.8 and 2.0 petrol engine, a 1.9 MultiJet turbodiesel, and a top-of-the-range 3.2 V6 petrol.
The GT is positioned as a sports car in Alfa Romeo's range, and sits alongside the Grand Tourer Brera (which is based on the newer mid-size Alfa 159 sedan/saloon car). Both cars can be viewed as successors to the 916-series GTV. Keeping two mid-sized sports coupés in production simultaneously is unusual and the two cars could be construed as being in competition with each other. If Alfa Romeo is viewed as the sporting arm of the larger Fiat group however the move makes more sense: with no sporting Fiat badged cars currently in production, the marketplace arguably had ample room for both these cars, each being tailored to a different niche. Historically Alfa's strategy of developing sporting cars from their conventional sedan/saloon car offerings has found much favour among traditional Alfisti, and ensured good sales.
In 2006 Alfa introduced a 1.9 JTD Q2 version with limited slip differential, and also added a new trim level called Black Line. In 2008 Alfa introduced the cloverleaf model as a limited edition complete with new trim levels, lowered suspension, body kit, 18 inch alloy wheels and only available in the colours black, alfa red, or blue. with engines 1.8 L and 2.0 L petrol and 1.9 L Multijet turbo diesel. These are effectively the run out models and as such are very well specified.

Appearance

The GT has been widely acclaimed for its attractive styling and purposeful good looks. The design is by Bertone who have a long history of collaboration with Alfa Romeo, the most notable being the B.A.T series concepts of the 1950s. The general coupe shape resembles that of the 1980s Alfa Romeo Sprint but with clear design cues taken from more modern Alfa Romeo products. The GT wears 16-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 17-inch wheels as an option. There are 18-inch alloy wheels available, but the extra width pinches from the GT's 11.5 metres (37.7 ft) turning circle.

Engines

Rear view of an Alfa Romeo GT
The 240 PS (177 kW; 237 hp) 3.2-litre V6 offers good all-round performance but is prone to torque steer while the 1.9-litre JTD turbodiesel has proven to be a popular choice in comparison to the petrol 2.0-litre engine. The 3.2-litre V6 petrol unit is positioned as the 'sports' option with its large power output and distinctive Alfa Romeo exhaust note, unique to the Alfa V6 family of engines. The 1.8 Twin Spark petrol engine is lifted directly from the 156, it is a tried and tested unit giving respectable levels of power while still remaining economical. The 2.0L petrol has direct injection and is an improvement on the older 2.0L petrol unit found in the Alfa 156 on which the GT is based, with an increase of 15 PS (11.0 kW; 14.8 bhp) and better fuel consumption.
The 1.9 L direct injection diesel unit is the most popular option, the high torque output at low revs gives more of a feeling of power at "normal" road speeds compared to the 2.0-litre petrol which requires much higher revs to produce its maximum power output and is best suited to being driven hard. This combined with the significant gain in fuel economy (see statistics below) make the diesel a popular choice. The economy of the diesel combined with the power and 6 speed gearbox make it a real GT car with a range of around 600 miles (970 km) per tank at motorway speeds.

Brakes and suspension

For stopping power, there are 284 mm (11.2 in) ventilated discs up front and 276 mm (10.9 in) at the rear. The most powerful version 3.2 L and all cloverleaf models have 330 mm (13.0 in) ventilated discs at front. The GT comes as standard with anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and hydraulic brake assistance.
Despite it being a two-door or coupé, the GT does not have a 2+2 seating configuration but is a five-seater, with the rear occupants not feeling cramped for the lack of legroom. This is because of the 156 heritage, sharing the chassis. Entrance to the rear of a GT is via foldable front seats. The GT is also in fact a 3 door with a hatchback allowing access to a surprisingly large rear boot.
The latest technological advances were incorporated, such as VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) which is Alfa's version of ESP (Electronic Stability Program), ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) or Traction Control, EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), ABS, Brake Assist and later the Q2 System. The Q2 system is Alfa's highly developed and efficient Limited-Slip Differential technology, for improved cornering (particularly in the wet) and power transfer to the wheels. This reduces wheel spin, torque steer and eliminates the understeer common to front-wheel drive cars.
Details like the wheel camber being set at a negative specification to improve cornering capabilities, as in a track vehicle, were included. Hardened and modified suspensions as opposed to the 156, thus sacrificing marginally on ride comfort for road holding. Extreme body-hugging, adjustable leather seats for minimal lateral movement during hard cornering. All of the above made the GT appealing to the performance-oriented customer.
However, Alfa Romeo integrated luxury with its 'caged panther' concept by ensuring the car was highly equipped, with standard features like power steering, trip computer, air conditioning, reverse assist, dual climate control, airbags (including 'curtain' airbags) with internal passenger sensors to decide remotely which airbags to deploy, side-mirror defrosters, and cruise control, plus options like seat warmers, leather interior, ten CD changer, satellite radio controls and windscreen sensors for automatic wiper activation.
The combined effect of these specifications created a highly developed, responsive and manoeuvrable vehicle at high speeds and in challenging conditions, making it safer and comfortable to drive every day at conventional speeds.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta, (Type 940) is a small family car produced by Italian automaker Alfa Romeo and also the replacement for the Alfa Romeo 147. Giulietta production started towards the end of 2009 and was introduced at the March 2010Geneva Motor Show. In a viability plan forwarded to the US Government in February 2009, Chrysler (a partner of Alfa Romeo parent company Fiat) reported that the 147 replacement would come to market as the Milano and that it could be built in the USA. However, as of early 2010 Fiat was instead planning to concentrate on bringing larger models to the US, such as the Giulia. The Giulietta came in second place in the 2011 European Car of the Year awards.
The 2010 Giulietta is available only as a 5-door hatchback. The Giulietta got its Italian dealer presentation on 22 and 23 May 2010. The Giulietta advertising campaign is made with Hollywood actress Uma Thurman. The end of the advert features the car's mottos - 'I am Giulietta, and I am such stuff as dreams are made on' and 'Without heart, we would be mere machines'.

Safety and driving aids

The Giulietta was designed with a target of a 5-star EuroNCAP safety rating. The car also has many electronic devices as standard: VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control)electronic stability control, DST (Dynamic Steering Torque), Q2 electronic differential and Alfa Romeo DNA selector which allows driver to choose between three different driving settings; Dynamic, Normal and All-Weather, this setting controls the behaviour of engine, brakes, steering, suspension and gearbox.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is equipped with a reactive head restraint and gained five star (5/5 stars) rating and overall score of 87/100 in the Euro NCAP car safety tests. That result makes it the safest compact car ever. Giulietta's result (97% Adult Occupant, 85% Child Occupant, 63% Pedestrian Protection and 86% Safety Assist) means that the car will also have five-star rating in 2012 when the Euro NCAP system will have reached maximum severity. The Giulietta was named as best performing Small Family category car in 2010 by Euro NCAP.

Platform

The platform used is Fiat Group’s Compact also called as "C-Evo" during the planning stage. Practically this is an all new platform.Fiat Group used around 100 million euros to re-engineer the C-platform, previously used for the Fiat Stilo, Fiat Bravo and Lancia Delta, into C-Evo, it has a longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs and an advanced new type of MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. Depending on the market and trim level, 16, 17, or 18 inch wheels are available. Available tire sizes are 205/55 R16, 225/45 R17, and 225/40 R18.The wheels use a 5-hole pattern with a 110 mm bolt circle. The length of the Giulietta is around 4.3 metres (14 ft), which is similar to the Alfa Romeo 156. Only a five-door body is available for sale.

Variants

Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde (2010-)

It is a version with 1.75 L turbocharged TBi engine rated 235 PS (173 kW; 232 hp), lowered ride height (15 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear), 17-inch wheels (18-inch optional), an enhanced braking system with calipers painted Alfa red, sporty leather and microfibre seats. 1750 is an engine size which has its roots in Alfa Romeo's history, with 1.75 L engines being used to power some of Alfa Romeo's first cars.
UK version is sold as Alfa Romeo Giulietta Cloverleaf.

Giulietta GTS Q2

It is a version of GT Q2 with Sport Package for Hong Kong market. It includes the engine from 1.4 TB MultiAir TCT, 6-speed TCT transmission.

120 HP 1.4 LPG Turbo (2011-)

It is a version using LPG and petrol fuel types. It includes Euro 5-compliant 1.4-litre turbo engine rated 120 PS (88 kW; 118 hp) at 5000 rpm and 206 N·m (152 lb·ft) at 1750 rpm, three different trim levels (Giulietta, Progression and Distinctive) for all European markets, 38-litre toroid type (ring-shaped) LPG tank at spare wheel housing, 6-speed manual transmission.
The LPG version was unveiled in 2011 Bologna Motor Show.

Engines

The range of engines includes the new 1.4 L T-Jet petrol and M-jet diesel family, all turbocharged. A six-speed manual and Dual Dry Clutch Transmission TCT (Twin Clutch Transmission) introduced at the 2010 Paris International Motor Show, will be choice gearboxes for customers. Fitted to the 1.4 MultiAir petrol and 2.0 MultiJet diesel, this compact six-speed gearbox reduces the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of both engines compared to the manual versions. The diesel drops to 119 g/km, while the petrol is reduced to 121 g/km,giving the latter best-in-class emissions and power output in its class for a petrol engine.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta uses a new engine which utilizes a system known as Multiair. The system controls the amount of air going into the engine by controlling when air is allowed into the engine and how much the inlet valve opens. The system works by inserting a "tappet" between the cam shaft and the valve and the engine management system can control the amount of oil that is allowed into the "tappet" thus changing the effective opening profile of the inlet valve. The system can also change the overlap of the inlet and exhaust valves as well as changing the amount of lift and this allows the engine to maintain a steady pressure in the inlet manifold which is used to increase the amount of torque the engine produces while maintaining the efficiency of the engine. The system is said to increase torque by 20% while reducing emissions by a similar amount. All engines except the 1750 TBi have a Start&Stop system and all are Euro5 rated.
The top of the range model has 1.7 L turbocharged engine the 1750 TBi - 235 PS (173 kW; 232 hp) with an exclusive Quadrifoglio Verde configuration (called Cloverleaf in the UK). At the 2011 Bologna Motor Show an LPG version of the Giulietta was unveiled.
